The cold and dry weather this time of year can be harsh on your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to dry skin, eczema, and other skin irritations. I keep a variety of problem-solving creams, ointments, and balms on hand to tackle just about any skin issue. These skin savers are loaded with natural, active ingredients to help eliminate your winter skin blues!
Here are my VIP's ...
I discovered this cream years ago while looking for solutions to help my son's eczema. It features a rich, creamy formula crafted with pure ingredients and contains no fillers, fragrance, or added preservatives. The key ingredient in this remarkable cream is Manuka honey, known for its incredible antibacterial properties that aid in wound healing and combating infections like MRSA and staph (which can trigger the severe itching associated with eczema). Olive oil and beeswax enhance its healing and moisturizing effects. YoRo has an EWG Skindeep 1 rating and is perfect for those with sensitive skin. In addition to treating my son's eczema flare-ups, I apply it to burns, minor scrapes or cuts, dry/chapped skin around my mouth or nose, and I generously apply it to my hands before bed for intense hydration. My husband uses it around his eyes to manage seborrheic dermatitis flare-ups. It's safe to say we'll always keep a few jars of this product on hand!
Hypochlorous acid is naturally produced in our white blood cells. It plays an important role in the immune system, killing pathogens through oxidation and chlorination. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and helps with wound healing. I discovered hypochlorous acid when searching for remedies for my dry eye issues. I use it to clean my eyes before bed and in the morning. It helps to safely and gently remove bacteria to help mitigate dry eye symptoms. My dry eye syndrome causes me to wake up with gunky, crusty eyes when my allergies are at their worst (thanks, Santa Ana winds 😫). I use hypochlorous acid to clean them without any irritation. With its gentle and effective antibacterial properties, hypochlorous acid is also great for using as a face spray to treat acne. I was recently shocked to see that it was marketed as face toner for over $50 a bottle by a high-end skincare company! It is also very helpful for symptoms of eczema and seborrheic dermatitis by reducing itch, pain, and inflammation. I keep a bottle of this on my vanity, as well as in my first aid kit to treat any and all skin irritations, cuts, and burns.
All Good Goop - Skin Recovery Balm
This rich balm is a deeply soothing moisturizer for hands, feet, lips, or anywhere you need deep hydration. Made with Vitamin E and calendula oil sourced directly from All Good’s organic farm, this luxurious balm packs a restorative punch for the price. I slather it on my feet after my evening shower and put on my cozy socks to help hydrate my dry, cracked heels! I also love it for my cuticles. It smells amazing and has no artificial fragrance.
I recently replaced my Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask with this Restore Healing Balm by Dr. Rogers. This award-winning, do-it-all beauty balm has only 3 clean, biodegradable ingredients - no fragrances, petrolatum, or colorings added. I loved the Laneige lip mask, but if I am putting something on my mouth every night, I want it to be as pure as possible. This works even better than my previous lip mask at keeping my lips hydrated all night and helps to alleviate any dryness. The key ingredient in this balm is castor oil, which is a hypoallergenic plant oil and emollient known to feed the skin with essential fatty acids and decrease inflammation. Need a replacement for petrolatum-based Aquaphor? This is it. Have red, irritated skin around your nose from a cold? Slather this on your skin, and it will heal like magic. It is even safe to use around your eyes, so it is great for any irritation or rash like contact dermatitis on your eyelids. Dr. Rogers has a clean line of refined skincare essentials, and I am looking forward to trying more of her products!
For an everyday, deeply hydrating body moisturizer, I LOVE the body butter from Primally Pure! A blend of vitamin-rich tallow, nourishing botanical butters, and therapeutic plant oils in this clean body butter help to moisturize and balance your skin's microbiome (yes...just like your gut, your skin has a microbiome!). Beef tallow from grass-fed cattle has a chemical composition similar to the natural oils in our skin, enabling it to deeply moisturize and safeguard the skin barrier. It also supplies vital nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, which can aid in enhancing skin elasticity, promoting healing, and reducing inflammation. I started with the sample pack to try the different scents, and it is hard for me to choose my favorite because they all smell amazing! Right now, I am loving Eucalyptus + Lavender but will probably order the Citrus + Mint for the spring and summer months.
